Malvern District Auskick (MDA)

Program Overview

Safety, Safety, Safety, Skills, Fun, Community, Oh, and ... Aussie Rules!

The Auskick Program at Malvern has safety as its very first priority! That means there is NO TACKLING allowed at Auskick. Every child is treated with tender care. Respect for each other, respect for the rules and respect for all officials (yes, including umpires!), is constantly reinforced. The Coaches deal effectively with all forms of intimidation, bullying or any unacceptable behavior, so that EVERYONE gets a fair go. The Coaches all LOVE their footy and are committed to sharing their passion with their own kids and with yours too!

Run by Parent Volunteers

The Auskick Program at Malvern is run entirely by parent volunteers, who are simply parents of children participating in the program. In fact, without these parents there would be no Auskick Program at all. These Parents do not necessarily have any particular football skills when they start but they do receive the training they need to effectively demonstrate the skills to the kids. Some coaches, if they elect to, may attend an official AFL Coaches Training course. Some do, some don't.

Age Appropriate and Flexible Grouping

The Auskick Program at Malvern is run as 5 separate age-appropriate programs. The Coaches remain with Preps, Grade 1's, Grade 2's, Grade 3's or with Grades 4-6's. A completely different program of skill training has been developed that matches the needs and abilities of kids at the various levels. Having a comparatively large number of children participating in each age group, ensures that there will always be an opportunity to have a game (after week 6 for Preps). With approximately 40 Coaches, if a particular Coach is away, there is also the advantage of being able to maintain a low ratio of kids to Coaches (typically 10:1)

MDA Relationship with the AFL

Being consistently the largest Auskick Clinic in Australia (in fact in the WORLD!), the AFL have established a close working relationship with the coordinators of MDA. At times, when other Clinics are unable to field a team to play a grid-game at half time at the MCG or Telstra Dome, MDA is contacted. MDA can organise teams at very short notice, due simply to the number of participants and coaches. Whilst we are mindful of all clinics getting a fair go, sometimes it comes down to us or no-one. In such cases, it's your kids out on the field and if you take on being a Coach, maybe it's you on the MCG too!

Above and Beyond ...

MDA have introduced some fantastic opportunities for the whole community to be involved in the program. The regular events we hold each year are Mother's Day Clinic, Grand Parent's Day, Parent's Game, Lightning Premiership and a few others. Those that have attended our unique offering in Commando Day, know that this is truly an extraordinary event, made possible by being set up by our local Scout group the night before and by Coaches sleeping overnight on the ground! This year Rego Day is also going to be a HUGE event (Tip: wear something that will make you look good on TV!) being a first for the Auskick Program and a first for the AFL. (If I say any more it won't be a surprise).

Different Programs for each Age Group.

With each age group we structure the clinics accordingly. For a detailed description of each of the sessions, follow the links below.
